Detailed Itinerary
Arrival to the Vibrant Forest of Puerto Maldonado! (B, L, D)
“Enjoy the Canopy Tower, a world-renowned birding destination”
Take your flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado (1.40h). The recommended schedule for the flight is departing at 08:05 am and arriving at 10:45 am.
Once you arrive you will be assisted by tourism professionals, community members, biologists and tour guides. You will be brought from the airport to an office in Puerto Maldonado. There the tour guides will invite you to pack only your necessary things for your next few days in the jungle and leave the rest at our safe storage room. This is necessary to maintain the boat and cargo light.
Next step is the transfer to the Tambopata River Port Skirting Puerto Maldonado. To get there we drive 20 kilometers, entering the Native Community of Infierno. Then there is a forty five minute boat ride from the Tambopata Port to Posada Amazonas, which will take you into the Community’s Primary Forest Private Reserve.
Canopy Tower
You will receive a short briefing, then you have to be prepared to enjoy the most amazing experience with incredible views of the rainforest from 30 meters above the ground.
The canopy tower is located twenty minutes away from Posada Amazonas. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From atop you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you.
Ecotourism Lecture
The project about the ecotourism of Infierno is available every night conducted by a staff member.
Overnight at Posada Amazonas Lodge
Delight With the Excursion of Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake (B, BL, D)
“Experience the true lush Amazon jungle”
From Posada Amazonas Tres Chimbadas is located thirty minutes away by boat, plus forty five minutes walking distance. Once you get there you will travel around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife. Otters are most active from dawn to 08:00 or 09:00 pm.
Parrot Clay Lick
The parrot clay Lick is located only twenty minutes away from Posada Amazonas. Along the way you will find parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank.
Also you may see the Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is active at dawn, during the late mornings and mid-afternoons.
Ethno botanical Tour
The communal organization of the Centro Ñape is famous for the production of medicines from forest plants and administers them to patients.
They have created a nature trail that explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants.
Night Walk
It is optional to go for a night walk if you want give it a try to maybe see some of the rarely seen mammals. In any case it is much easier to find frogs with shapes
and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
Overnight at Posada Amazonas Lodge
Time to Leave the Jungle (B)
Time to say goodbye to the Jungle
This is the last morning in Posada Amazonas. After breakfast you will take the boat to Puerto Maldonado headquarters. You will be transferred to the airport to take your flight from Puerto Maldonado to Lima (departing at 11:25 am and arriving at 14:15 pm) or any other destination.
