The Peruvian Amazon is so giant as it is fascinating. Days, weeks and months can go on, and still, the time would be short to do everything possible within the territory that spreads over 9 countries, Peru being the birthplace of the Amazon river. Here, from Auri Peru Travel, we list just a few of the infinite things you could do when visiting the Peruvian Amazon.

The Peruvian Amazon is divided into three main regions: northern, central, and southern, in which you can have different experiences, from enjoying the vast Wildlife in Peru, and diverse Peruvian Amazon Tours, to navigating the Peruvian Amazon Cruises and tasting delicious Amazonian Cousine.

Peruvian Amazon Cruises in the northern region.

One of the best things to do in the Peruvian Amazon is sailing cruises at its best around mid-year. You can take unique tours from Iquitos on luxurious cruises that sail the Marañón and Ucayali rivers and go around the Natural Reserve Pacaya-Samiria, Peru’s largest reserve.

Discovering the wildlife in Peru in the Pacaya-Samiria Natural reserve.

The diversity of life in the Pacaya-Samira reserve represents about 27% of the wildlife in Peru. More than a thousand species can be spotted in this area. Here you can observe exotic birds, the pink river dolphin, manatees, river wolf, and playful monkeys or even jaguars between the trees.

Enjoy the various Peruvian Amazon tour in the central region of the Amazon.

Chanchamayo, the Valley in La Merced, is one of the favourite places to start the Peruvian Amazon Tour. You can do great birdwatching activities, buy colourful and authentic handicrafts, and support the locals.

Oxapampa is a charming small town in the middle of the jungle with a significant German influence. As with every cultural mixture in Peru, the city hosts unique experiences for the tourist who visit. The Peruvian Amazon tour includes wooden houses, magnificent churches, small markets, and in the surroundings, imposing waterfalls and mysterious caves can be reached a few hours far from the city.

In the central region of the Amazon, Satipo and Pozuzo are other remarkable tourist places. Plenty of activities are also offered in these small cities surrounded by nature. Like visiting Museums, the central square with a lot of history and, of course, going trekking in the nearby jungle and swimming in natural lakes, lagoons and waterfalls, and immersing in the magic of the Peruvian Amazon.

The magic of the southern jungle and Madre de Dios.

Madre de Dios is a beloved region to live the jungle experience. This territory is closer to the ancient ruins of Macchu Picchu and lets you adventure everything the Peruvian amazon offers.

The capital city of Puerto Maldonado is the perfect place to have within easy reach of different aspects of the Peruvian Amazon by entering the jungle and staying in a lodge.

Also, here it is possible to live the Peruvian amazon cruises and visit parts of the jungle less frequented than Iquitos. Although Madre de Dios has been devastated by illegal mining and logging, it still keeps a lot of activities to enjoy and know about the Peruvian amazon.

Madre de Dios is still home to several indigenous tribes that live in relative isolation, keeping their traditions, typical houses and clothes. Some Peruvian amazon tours can include a brief visit to one of their villages.

In Madre de Dios, you can also visit the Tambopata Natural reserve and stay at the Tambopata research centre, an eco-friendly lodge in the Peruvian Amazon. More than 630 bird species, 1200 butterfly species, 103 amphibian species, 180 fish species, 169 mammal species and 103 reptile species can be found; a wide variety of wildlife in Peru.

Besides the natural reserve, there is also the Manu National Park to visit. This area is a UNESCO-certified park in the Madre de Dios region and one of the best locations in America to observe tropical wildlife in Peru. Going to Manu National Park is also quite an adventure, with a few hours and different means of transport.

As you can see, the Peruvian Amazon is pretty giant and offers tourists different kinds of unique experiences. Whether you decide to visit only one region or spend several weeks in the jungle, each part will show you a colourful, different and extraordinary reality. With Auri Peru Travel, you will be able to appreciate a memorable experience in the Peruvian amazon.

Remember to take into consideration the different environments in which you will interact to show respect to indigenous people and their way of life, asking for permission before taking pictures and offering them objects or food that they are not used to. Respect all the wildlife in Peru and the environment as you find it. And most important, take good care of yourself and the people travelling with you.
